About Verita

Hi my name is Verita Black Prothro and I would like to be your next Washoe County Public Administrator. I am a proud Reno native and I am a graduate of Washoe County Schools, the University of Nevada with a bachelor’s degree and from Lesley College with a Master’s degree. My father came here in the 1940s. My mother in the 1950s both seeking a better life with little more than their personal belongings and a dream of success. The lessons they taught me are the same ones that I am teaching my young son today. Hard Work, Honesty. Integrity. These principles govern my daily life and I look forward to bringing them to the Public Administrator’s office.

A Love for Education

I’ve had a robust career working for the University of Nevada, as well as directing operations regionally for the US Senate for eight years. I’m a published author and also owned a clothing boutique for many years.

Why Public Administrator?

I thought long and hard about this position and how I would best serve my community. The office of Washoe County Public Administrator oversees the property of people who have passed away when there is no will and /or heirs or when their heirs cannot be located. Losing a loved one is hurtful and it is a difficult period of time. The Public Administrator’s Office needs to be headed by someone who can not only direct the intricate work but also someone who will bring compassion,  a broad focus and make the office more approachable, especially for underserved communities. My plan is to update the process, make it transparent and to implement a public education series committed to making people well aware of the choices that work best for them. I would also like the office to address elder abuse and how this office can help combat it.

In Closing

As I close, I ask for your help to build a flourishing campaign. I can’t do it without your help. I need volunteers: people who will walk their neighborhoods and talk to their friends, and ultimately I need your vote on November 6th.
